The world’s still quite small fleet of ultra luxury cruise ships, the best of the best, all boast impeccable interiors and fittings, fine dining and exceptional service. Nothing wrong with that but to find a ship that sets out to do it differently is quite a discovery. The 540 guest Deutschland bears that mark of individuality.

Deutschland was built to the design of Peter Deilmann who founded one of Europe’s most respected cruise lines, and whose twin daughters continue to run the line to his founding principles. It was his dream to recreate the classic ocean going liner. Wide walkways round the ship and on virtually all outside deck areas are finished in traditional teak, restaurants are glamorous and sophisticated, there are beautiful public rooms – where most ships have a show lounge, Deutschland has a galleried theatre – and furnishings that might have come from a regal residence, original art and statuary everywhere, all mark Deutschland as a highly individual cruise ship.

Peter Deilmann also daringly decreed ‘no balconies’ and the pleasing result is a sleek profile, away from the slab sided floating hotel modern look, that makes Deutschland every inch an ocean going classic.

But classic style doesn’t at all mean old fashioned. Not at all! Deutschland is modern in every sense, with three dining choices, a well equipped spa and fitness area, internet and Wi-Fi facilities, a cinema, library and in the luxuriously fitted cabin suites, excellent bathrooms and showers plus a mini bar and TV.

Very agreeable too for my few days this spring travelling from Venice to Civitavecchia, Port of Rome, there was plenty of deck space round a good sized pool where guests seemed to refrain from the selfish habit of leaving books and sunglasses on sun loungers and disappearing for the afternoon, so rude to others on board. Perhaps it was a just that there are more than enough seats for everybody – another difference between Deutschland and too many other ships.

Exterior design is actually remarkably spacious for a relatively smaller (29,000gt) ship. Apart from the spacious pool deck area, there are no less than three decks with open areas overlooking the stern, two with sun loungers and one with tables and chairs for coffees, reading and cards where light lunches are served from the outside grill bar, all this plus a fourth deck with an open area reserved for users of the health centre. There never seemed to be a problem to find somewhere to relax with a book and for the more active there are putting greens and a golf driving range on deck 10 where Zodiac inflatables were also kept for use when itineraries take guests to more adventurous and inaccessible locations like the Amazon and Antarctica.

Afternoon tea, with cakes and pastries freshly prepared by the chefs on board, is served by white gloved staff in the Lido Terrace, a large light, forward facing room, while a pianist plays in the background. My mid priced suite, although finely fitted, was adequate in size rather than generous, with clothes cupboards that are also adequate but require the passengers travelling on longer voyages of 14 nights and more to plan carefully before packing.

On deck 3, the Wellness Spa features an indoor pool, Thalasso and Ayurveda and traditional massage treatments. The line has also introduced a professionally staffed on board dialysis treatment facility.

Of the three dining rooms, my personal preference was the Lido-Gourmet buffet restaurant, a charming room which is high up on deck 9, with sea views from most of the windows, and from where at lunchtime, and no doubt on warm summer evenings, a steward would carry your meal outside to one of the tables on the open rear deck. The choice of freshly prepared hot and cold items was huge and there was always in addition a further choice of hot main dishes prepared by the chef.

Other nights I dined at the Berlin, the main restaurant (fixed early and late seating and open seating for breakfast and lunch also) where five course meals of the highest standard were served by proficient and unobtrusive staff. The third choice, the Four Seasons Restaurant has to be pre-booked, although at no extra charge, for a true gourmet dining experience where superb menus of dishes created with the finest ingredients were individually prepared for diners.

Wines reflect the high standard of the ship and start at around 22 Euros, quickly moving up to 25, 28 and more. Good values are the carafes starting at 8.50 Euros, which give a good-sized glass for two.

As the cruise line, Peter Deilmann River and Ocean Cruises (the company has a fleet of impeccably run ships on several of the main European rivers) is German owned, the majority of the 540 guest capacity are German although there were British and American guests also on board.

If this makes you hesitate, don’t. Germans and Brits are alike in that they are initially slightly formal and prefer to find a way to break the ice before embarking on a conversation. But I quickly found that German passengers are welcoming and many are delighted to show off their English capability. On this cruise, one of a series created to suit British passenger tastes, in-cabin information, daily newspapers, restaurant menus and other written material are all supplied in English. In-cabin TV has a news and movie channel in English and English speaking films were shown in the cinema. The ship’s staff also speaks perfect English for the main part.

As another look backward towards traditional cruising, smoking is allowed in the old-fashioned pub bar, the Old Fritz, which opens out into an outside sitting area. In the more nightclub-style Lili Marleen salon where each night a polished vocalist, saxophone, and pianist trio entertained with quiet songs, smoking is allowed in a part of the room although efficient air conditioning kept the air clean across the whole seating area.

As part of the specially prepared programme for English speaking passengers, daily shore excursions were prepared, with local guides speaking excellent English. Excursions ranges from cultural – a visit to Olympia, the home of the Greek Gods (they weren’t in) when we called at Katakolon and guided tours round the Croatian town of Kadar and the walled town of Kotor in Montenegro – to the sheer fun of a genuine Italian ice cream on a sunny terrace overlooking the Bay of Naples, Vesuvius and the Isle of Capri. The entire programme worked very well and at Kadar, the jetty facing the open sea had been constructed with openings into acoustic chambers so that the wind and sea maintains mystical sounds of music, like the traditional pipes of the Andes.

When it comes to cherishing those special moments in life, no one should ever take a chance or leave fate to do its bidding but they should instead get their hands on the best digital cameras in town so as to keep their precious memories intact and concrete at the same time. Many people will more often than not settle for a random camera with fair performance and the bad thing about such cameras is that they produce fair images with nothing much to look or be amazed at. There’s this saying that cheap is expensive and expensive is cheap and it truly does apply to photography and more precisely when deciding on which are the best digital cameras.

Cameras just like any other piece of equipment have a most expansive part, a part without which the entire camera becomes useless. This one very important part happens to be the lens of the camera. This simple looking glass is what sets apart the best digital cameras from the normal digital cameras. But why speak of digital cameras? Well, the 21st century has made it possible for people to take pictures and see how they look like without having to process them via the screen on the digital device. The era of the other types of cameras that required one to put in a film and then develop it so as to get their pictures is slowly fading away though some camera lovers still prefer them due to their classic designs, a case of old being gold.

One of the un-appealing aspects about cameras that required the use of films to capture and process the image is that if the film area located on the back side of the camera somehow got opened in the presence of sunlight, the film gets damaged and no amount of effort put in processing it would improve its “dark” appearance. But as mentioned above, thanks to the technological improvements in the 21st century, the manufacture of digital cameras has led them to the most preferred method of taking photographs in whatever environment one may be in.
So which are the best digital cameras? To answer this question, we need to look at the characteristics a good camera should have in relation to the needs of the photographer whether amateur or professional.

Characteristics Of The Best Digital Cameras

Should be easy to use-If one finds that using the camera is too complex with a lot of details then more often than not it’s not the best. The price range-It should be in a reasonable range in relation to the digital cameras features. Quality of pictures it captures-This is the most important indicator of best digital cameras. As earlier said the lens is the most important and expensive part of the camera and one that produces poor or faulty images implies that the quality of the lens inferior.
There are many other indicators as to which are the best digital cameras though one important thing to note is that this is a subjective question; dependent on the user.

One of the best brands is Sony. The Sony digital cameras range has something for everyone, in terms of price and quality.

written by: danipcom

When searching for washing machines, it is advisable to look at the special features, the price, the performance of the gadget and most importantly the brand name. Some of the high producing brands in the electronics sector have been in business for many years and continually upgrade the features of the products to suit the needs of the users. This makes it much easier for client use, saves on power and quite economical. Some of the top five brands of washing machines have repeatedly produced other electronics, which makes them the leading brands in this sector.

The Asko WCAM1812 Front Load All in One listed as one of the best performing according to recent reviews. It is quite affordable in price, compact in shape and does many duties at the same time. It has a 1200-RPM speed, it performs the normal washing functions, and the user gets to control the speed of the gadget. The most interesting feature is the internal moisture condenser that generates the heat to dry the clothes at the fastest speeds. It has ten wash presets and does not produce noise when in motion.

Frigidaire FTF2140FS Front load Washer is one of the fastest and reliable washing machines from one of the reputable brands in the market. It has a speed of 950 RPM, does not tear the garment, and has 10 pre-sets. It does the laundry quickly hence saving on energy, water and soap. Many people love it since it has a classic design, is large, and does not make noise when using it. It saves on energy especially when in the condensation process and one does not need to keep on adjusting the settings since they get to reset once.
The Miele washing machines are getting quite popular by the day and the latest introduction is the MieleW3740. It has a large washing capacity making it easy for one to insert large garments like blankets and curtains. It is fast, less noisy, has a nice design and numerous features that assist in energy saving.

Some of the washing machines enable one to minimize the water level used and the best in this category is the Xeros Waterless Washer. One only needs to use minimal water to wash, has strong condensation powers, uses minimal energy, and has a large washing capacity making one do laundry at once.

The whirlpool is another brand, which gives some of the best washing machines. They enable one to save on energy, water and less noisy. This design comes in a good exterior and interior layout, easy to operate and most importantly, allows one to wash huge number of cloths at once. This makes it quite easy for people who have families since they do not need to wash many rounds but only few types of washing.

Getting the washing machines is very easy but it is advisable to compare and contrast the different brands and models. People who want to save on energy, water, and time need to focus on the brands that give such options. Most of the washing machines are durable making one to use them for many years.

With the help of technology it is now possible to carry media and important data wherever you go. The invention of external hard drives has made life very simple since it allows the ease of carrying information from one place to another.

External hard drives are the best computer back up devices ever invented. They are able to carry more files than the tape recorders and computer disks which make them better back up devices. In this error where people accumulate a lot of files, from documents, videos, movies etc external hard drives have provided just what people need in terms of data storage. The hard drives have a lot of benefits compared to their other back up counter parts. Some of the benefits that they posses include; the fact that they are easily portable makes them easy to carry around wherever you go, it is a far more safer way to carry important information because even when your computer crashes the external hard drives are separate from the computer and they tend to store more data easily.

The hard drives come in different shapes, types and storage capacities. The top five external hard drives in the market today include;
-lacie 2big quadra 2TB.it is very stylish and easy to use
-Toshiba canvio hard drive it has a very sleek design. The good thing about it is that it has no software to install you just plug it in and start using it.
-Western digital hard drive. The external drive is specially made for mac computers and is a plug and play external drive that requires no installation of software. The good think about it is that it has a smaller shape and is very light which endears it to many users.
-Case logic hard drive. The hard drive is specially moulded to protect your information. It has a zippered enclosure which is specifically designed to keep your hard drive safe. It is also very light.

Once you have made up your mind on the hard drive you want to buy then what? If this is your question then this is what to do. External hard drives are so easy to install and use. The first step is to plug the external drive into your computer. The driver will appear as a letter in my computer, do you see it? If yes then you can view the files by clicking on the open folder. External hard drives have been designed to work as efficiently as just plugging them and you start using it. To copy information into the drive you just drag whatever information you want into the drive and it’s done. One should make sure you scan your hard drive frequently to ensure it is free from viruses to avoid losing your data.

Once you are done using your best external hard drive just unplug it safely from the computer and store it in an safe area that is not humid since water tends to destroy external hard drives. External hard drives are by far the best technological inventions man has come up with.

“If it aint broke don’t fix it” is a saying that I have often heard in my 26 years on this planet. In fact my parents freezer is actually older than me (this is actually true), but it works, so why would or should we replace it?

Replacing items cost money, and many people cannot get past the logic of spending money up front to save money in the long run. Their budgets are set and they do not see why they should pay loads of money for something that won’t immediately have an effect.

However, did you know that new washing machines actually can have a A+++++ rating! By today’s standards a top quality washing machine 5 years ago would likely be A grade at the most and the majority would be B or C. This means that you will begin saving money from the very outset.

Not only are new washing machines more efficient, they can carry a larger load, are quieter, deal with stains better and generally just far better machines to work with. They will make you life easier and you will not have to worry about mounting utility bills, which are set to increase in 2012.

Take the Beko 51WM100 for example. It is actually only £200, which is at the lower end of the price spectrum, but, importantly it is very efficient, at A+, this means that for a small investment you can upgrade a 5 or 600 quid washing machines from 5 years ago with something that costs no more than a big night out with lads. The wife will be happy, you will be happy because the wife is happy and instead of literally throwing away money every month your home will become a more efficient place to be.

So the next time you get a shockingly high bill, take a look at you white goods, and what model it is. Google it to find out what efficiently it is offering, then shop around for an alternative – it will be worth it in the long run.

I had the absolute worst day the other day. It all started at 3am, which is already bad since my day normally starts at 7.

You see I heard my dog coughing and hacking up something nasty. Considering that she doesn’t get sick very often, I of course got up to see what was going on. Well as it turns out- she’d gotten into the garbage. Nice!

I then spent the next 10 minutes sitting with her to make sure she was okay. Eventually she was able to swallow whatever had been in her throat, so I guess she’s okay? Then it came time to clean up the garbage- always fun.

Anyways I get back to bed and drift in and out of sleep for a few hours. Finally I can’t take it anymore and just go ahead and get up. I figured I can get an early workout before I start getting ready for work- not a bad idea, right?

Except I just cannot find my running shoes! Granted most of my house was dark and I didn’t want to make tons of noise. I turned on what lights I could, used my phone as a flashlight and looked in all of my normal areas- but no shoes.

Oh well, I figured I would just make a cup of coffee and sit down with a good book. Luckily, this turned out okay and I didn’t spill coffee, tear a page in my book, etc.

On my way to work I hit every red light. When that happens, you just know it’s not going to be a good day. Especially when most of the red lights on my route stay green in the morning so people can get to work faster!

Work was a little more boring and dull than normal. A few people were out for the day so it was extremely quiet. It also made things tough because just when I would need someone to sign something- I’d remember they weren’t there! I also got a few phone calls from people wondering where Person X was. Although not a big deal, it was frustrating to keep repeating myself.

On the way home there was a big accident and I got caught in traffic. That’s always a mixed bag of emotions, right? I mean you feel sorry for the people in the wreck, but you also are mad that they are slowing down traffic. Maybe it’s a selfish thing, but it still pops into my head.

So I get home and find the house a mess. There were plates all over the sink and counter, clothes in the living room, and the dog had spilled his food across the kitchen.

After cleaning up I sat down with a glass of wine- pinot grigio to be exact. And you know what happened then?

Nothing.

Nothing went wrong, and everything was finally right in the world.

All of that to say- I guess I do have a few things to be thankful for. My alone time with coffee and wine in my new Forever Crystal wine glasses went well!

A Vacuum That Doesn’t Lose Suction

I have always been fond of the Dyson line of vacuum cleaners. It seems like an ideal way to clean my house. These vacuum cleaners are so beautiful that they deserve to grace my home with their presence. Right now, I am keeping my eye out on the dyson DC19T2 price. I really want to take advantage of a bargain if I see one. These vacuums are not cheap, but they are often found on sale. I believe that I should really take advantage of their pricing and purchase one when I don’t have to spend so much money. Either way, I think that they are going to be so great to have. I have been doing my research on them for a long time now, and they are exactly what I need. I want a vacuum that will not lose suction no matter how long I have had it for.

My mom and I will buy ipad 3 soon. I can’t believe that she is into this as well. I think that she is becoming more comfortable with technology and what it has to offer. It makes me feel good that she will be able to put the iPad to good use. We have both been waiting for the iPad 3 to come out for a while now, and we were quite glad when it was announced. It was just something that we couldn’t resist. I think that I will be purchasing mine online because I just love having things delivered at my doorstep. I think that it will be a great way to finally have a tablet computer. My mom has her old version for quite a while now, and I think that she needs an upgrade. We are going to be getting what is possibly the best device of the year.

I know that I am going to buy a new iPad as soon as I get my paycheck. This new iPad is the best yet, and I am rather excited for it. I feel that it is definitely something that I can put to good use when I am on break at work or at the doctor’s office. Since I am always on the go, I want to make sure that I can have a companion tablet that I can put to good use. It is certainly something that I have come to appreciate, and I know that I will be able to take advantage of it when I have it in my hands. Technology is improving everyday, and I must improve with it. I know that it is my duty to make sure that I get my iPad 3 as soon as possible. I will no longer be bored during my breaks.

Your plane is going to crash. Not that you, or anyone else aboard the flight. But you prepared nonetheless. No, you didn’t pack an emergency jetpack or set a trampoline up on a mountainside of the forested range you’re currently flying over. No, you wore your glasses. And they’re about to save your life more than 8 times today. Here’s how:

Before The Crash

It has been a smooth flight thus far, but things are about to change dramatically. Sadly, your glasses are currently useful for only one thing:

1. Spotting the plane that’s about to crash into you

Well, duh.

During the Crash

Prepared as you were, the reality of your situation still takes moment to sink in. As the plane begins its rapid descent towards the danger of terra firma, the crew hurry to distribute parachutes to the passengers, but to the horror of everyone onboard, the plane is stocked short…

2. Parachute Allocation

Suddenly an argument breaks out and the head hostess must select who will be jumping and who will be going down with the plane. She asks everyone to state their case concisely:

“I am most useful to society” says the Big-League Footballer “because I bring joy to millions. The only thing greater than the membership of my fan-club is my salary”;

“I am most useful to society” says the Teacher “because I am dedicated to my profession and the children I prepare for the world of tomorrow”;

“I am most useful to society” says the young aid-worker “because I have filled my life with good deeds, and I will continue to do so for the rest of my life”;

“I am most useful to society” says the President of the United States “because I am the leader of the free world, and the decision maker for over 300 million people”;

“Err…” you hesitate “I’m useful because I’m delivering my findings on the weaponised Higgs Boson to the United Nation’s council of err… Science. And err… if I don’t get to New York with my findings, life as we know it will be destroyed!”.

Without the time to have your report peer-reviewed, the hostess can only go on the simplest of cues. Do you look smart? You’re only getting out of this one with your geekiest, chiciest glasses on. Unless your contacts have very visible, very thick rims.

3. Cutting Yourself Free

Having lied through your teeth about your importance to humanity, you bail out, pull the cord on your parachute and float down into the dense jungle… only to be tangled in the emergent layer some 200 foot above the forest floor. Your movement is restricted by a tangle of parachute ropes. As you dangle there for a while, you realise you can just about reach your glasses. By working one of the arms into a buckle, you’re able to prise yourself free climb back down to safety…

After the Crash

Having freed yourself, you decide to head towards smoke in the distance – where you conclude the plane must have gone down. You may have lied your way to getting a parachute, but you at least care enough to see if anyone survived the crash.

4. Arming Yourself against danger

The darkness of the forest beneath the canopy dawns on you. Anything could be out there really: poisonous horrors, cannibalistic ape-men, the supporting cast of Deliverance… Having nothing on your person other than the clothes you jumped out of the plane with, your glasses are your best bet for self-defence. In danger in the jungle with nothing but your spectacles? Quickly snap off an arm and puncture the skull of whatever is trying to eat you.

5. Starting a Fire

A search of the plane confirms your fears: no survivors. In the midday sun, you start to think about shelter and the challenge of survival ahead. Thousands of miles away from barbecue ribs and nothing but inedible airline food in the plane. In your searches you were surprised to find not a single box of matches or a lighter – though the passenger manifest lists a delegation of the National Tobacco Cessation Collaborative, so that could offer a clue. You’ll need fire and you know how to get it: use a pair of far-sighted glasses to focus the sun’s rays onto some tinder. Easy.

6. Cutlery

Able to get a fire going for warmth, time wears on. You realise that you’re going to want to eat sometime. Fine for now, whilst you work through those dubious airline snacks, but you don’t trust the poisonous looking plants and animals in the forest… and the alternative? Well, that would require metal implements sharpened for the purpose of butchery before you even began. Oh, the glasses? Well I suppose they’ll do. Better get too it.

7. Seeing Rescue

If you don’t have the strongest sight those glasses are going to come in useful for, you know, seeing. Things you might want to see whilst stranded in the wilderness include: poisonous spiders, poisonous snakes, allergic reactions manifesting as skin complaints, rescue, and spelling mistakes in the SOS messages you are constructing (for instance, “SAS” may be interpreted as a warning to potential rescuers that you are armed to the teeth and capable of taking them unawares, snapping their necks and flying alone to safety).

8. Meeting the Next of Kin of Your Fellow Passengers

Despite the best efforts of Michael Keaton’s Batman, it’s still not cool to hit a guy wearing glasses. When you’re explaining how you dined on Johnny the quarterback’s sweetheart whilst waiting for the rescue helicopter to land, this may come in useful.

Steph Wood writes content for the Australian-based Omni Optics Sunglasses, usually whilst wearing glasses.

Since the beginning of human history, the extraction of raw materials from the crust of the earth has been a major cornerstone of scientific progress and economic advancement. We talk about much of antiquity in terms of what we were making things out of at the time, (i.e. Stone, Bronze and Iron ages) and our economies are still reliant on precious minerals and other earth-borne commodities at their most basic level. A piece of gemstone jewellery from Silver Island has most of human history as its cultural heritage, something to consider next time you buy silver jewellery. But the whole future of mining deserves reflection.

It’s no secret that, as essential as mining is, it’s part of some of the biggest environmental and even political issues that our world faces. Oil is our principle example, with the world scrambling for dwindling reserves and almost certainly entering wars specifically to control the commodity. But mining is also behind deforestation, ugly scars in the landscape and countless other issues of our time. But is there even an alternative?

The Exploitation of Space

Science Fiction seems to think so. Many of the most well-known science fiction movies, books, television shows and video games contain mining as a background to the action. The crews of Alien’s Nostromo and Red Dwarf were miners in deep space. More recently, we’ve had Avatar and Moon, with mineral extraction in their stories, and there are names as diverse as Mobile Suit Gundam, Armageddon and Eve Online doing the same in the genre’s past.

So, with resources on our own planet dwindling and space-flight an option, why do our space-mining exploits amount to not much more than a handful of (missing) moon rocks? Well, there’s no sense in overestimating our space-flight capability for starters. The cost of astronomical travel is, well, astronomical, and for every small amount in weight added, the cost of fuel rises substantially.

The actual practicalities of mining – either on other worlds, moons, asteroids or within the atmospheres of gas giants such as Jupiter, as have been suggested by science fiction – are within reach only in the broadest sense. Considering that manned missions beyond the earth sphere have never been attempted, some kind of automated, robotic mining system seems most likely. But with space-launches currently prohibitively expensive, such systems have barely gone beyond the stage of speculation.

What is being done?

There are two problems to solve. Firstly, the task of creating a space-launch system that is more cost efficient. More efficient rockets are being designed all the time, but short of constructing a non-rocket propelled method like a space elevator or Space gun, breakthroughs may be centuries away. Arguably, the reason why we don’t press forward with these developments is that the materials waiting for us in the stars simply haven’t been found. And as far as gathering data on potential sites goes, we’re a lot further ahead. Just about every probe sent out today is taking rock samples and feeding back the results to scientists, and we’ve noted all kinds of potentially fruitful worlds. It’s the mundane side of a rather exciting future in space.
